The positive impact of social media in our World

By Juan Manuel Alvarado

Some people say Social Media is a waste of time.

While some people think Social Media is useless, time wasting and world destroying distraction, the reality is that Social Media, like everything else, is what we make with it. Clearly we can spend hours tweeting and seeing meaningless YouTube videos without taking any real advantage of the tools. But we can also use the tools for good; we’re not talking about connecting with friends to maintain relationships, but being really productive in this Social Media World to impact different groups of people and create conscience on world problems.

September 23 is officially the Social Good Day, Mashable and Red teamed up to create this day with the main purpose of encouraging people to use Social Media as a tool to raise awareness and find ideas and solutions to the world social issues.

If we think how fast information travels nowadays, web 2.0, smart phones, every day we are connecting with more and more people without boundaries, all around the globe. Do we take advantage to create a positive idea and pass it along? How many Social Media leaders are out there? Why don’t we become Social Media Leader to impact in a positive way our world?

“Ideas that spread through groups of people are far more powerful than ideas delivered at an individual.” – Seth Godin

Social Media most important fact is that it connects the entire world, how fast do we hear about a disaster or an amazing world event? These can also be pursued as positive it gives the world a better chance to take action, makes us human beings be able to help on any disaster. Years ago this would take a big amount of time.

Social Media will not change the world, people will change the world but social media will certainly be a helpful tool.
